Video After The Jump
50 Cent and Lou DiBella have teamed up to executive produce a documentary about the life and death of talented but tormented former world championship boxer Johnny Tapia. The film will debut on HBO, December 16.
Bill "Two Scoops" Emes of Boxing Scene recently spoke with 50 about the documentary, the parallels between his life and Johnny's, his love for the sport of boxing, the death of Earl Hayes, friendship with Floyd Mayweather Jr., the chances of a Floyd vs. Manny Pacquiao fight, Bernard Hopkins wanting him to take on the lead role in his biopic, the movie Southpaw and more.
On TAPIA documentary
To hear a person speak in first person about their entire life's journey and then pass away right after. I think it's special when you're documenting your life in that way. It's like watching the last entry to a diary of his life.
On his love for boxing, friendship with Floyd Mayweather Jr. and meeting Earl Hayes
I live vicariously through Floyd and the other top fighters I have relationships with. Me and Floyd have been really good friends since 2002. And I met Earl Hayes in 2002, in Puerto Rico... Floyd brought him out there.
On the chances of a Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight.
I really don't see that fight taking place. I don't see him taking that fight, I don't. I know Floyd and I know [that he feels] he doesn't have to. He knows that no matter how they feel they will watch the next one and he'll leave when he's ready to leave boxing on top. A lot of the choices he makes is collective, it's not just him - it's his whole team. But when I get mad I blame it on him, I say it was him.
On Earl Hayes' death reopening the lines of communication with Floyd
Floyd's like my little brother. I always said this from the very beginning. I love him like a brother. If he does something [I don't like], I'll respond the way he understands me. So I'll get angry and do something back. Then you'll see us do things publicly. It don't mean we don't love each other. That's my partner, that's my brother.
