Chris Brown, Usher, Ne-Yo, Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Jay-Z and Dream were all supposed to be an active part of the Michael Jackson Tribute at the 2009 BET Awards show, but ultimately, Chris Brown was denied the opportunity to participate.
BET executives feared a backlash if they allowed Brown to perform, especially considering emotions are still running high about the Rihanna assault incident to which he pleaded guilty this month.
Brown and his handlers were said to have literally begged BET to reconsider. Insiders said: "Michael is/was Chris' idol and this tribute means the world to him."
Executives also feared that by allowing Chris to take the stage, his drama might overshadow the network's tribute to Michael Jackson. Jay-Z was also said to have played a major role in blocking Brown's participation.
