Video After The Jump

Bronx, NY born/Harlem, NY raised rapper VampLife Records/The Diplomats member, Jim Jones, sits down with DJ Smallz and reflects on his recent 40th birthday, and how he celebrated, how much longer he plans on rapping for, his A&R skills and who is currently on his radar.

On turning 40

"It means a lot to me. Where I'm from most people didn't make it to see 40. Either they're dead or incarcerated. That's a true story. For me to make it to 40, I feel like I've lived a lot of life. A lot of life that I didn't feel like I would live. Coming up I had a live fast, die young attitude. I think I've gotten too old to die young. So, now I'll try to school the kids on how to live longer."

On how long he'll continue rapping.

"I don't think I'm over it. Music is something that moves you for life. My passion for music is something that will always be there. It's a passion that I acquired to love. It wasn't love at first sight, it was hustle at first sight. Music for me, was always the money first once I learned how to do it. With that I got better and became more competitive at it. The passion I have now is like any other artist. For the most part it's still business. I probably got two more albums left in me. We'll see how that goes."

Jones went on to name Lil Uzi Vert, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, Young M.A., Neek Bucks, Dave East, Quick Trip, Ball Greezy and Philthy Rich as artists he's currently listening to.
