Minnesota Vikings star running back Adrian Peterson is dealing with a terrible tragedy this morning. His 2-year old son was severely beaten by a man dating the child's mother.
TMZ reports that the child is in critical condition at a Sioux Falls, South Dakota hospital. He is believed to have suffered brain injuries.
27-year-old Joseph Patterson was arrested and charged with aggravated felony assault and battery of an infant.
The child was alone in Patterson’s home at Platinum Valley Apartments, where he’d recently moved with his mother. Patterson called 911 to report a choking on Wednesday evening, but Lt. Blaine Larsen of the Sioux Falls Police Department said it became clear at the hospital that the boy’s injuries were not accidental.
Patterson has a violent past, according to the Argus Leader.
2 different women have filed for protection orders against Patterson since 2004. In 2012 he was charged with assault of one of the women.
The injured infant in this latest incident is one of Peterson's sons, but TMZ reports that it is not Adrian Peterson Jr.
Peterson has left the Vikings to be with his son.

Peterson sent out a series of tweets thanking everyone for their support.
"God Bless everyone and thank u so much. The NFL is a fraternity of brothers and I am thankful for the tweets, phone calls and text messages from my fellow players. Thank you to my family, my fans and fans of other teams for their support."
TMZ reports that the child had been on life support since 5:30 PM Thursday. He was unresponsive so the family made the decision to take him off of the ventilator.
Adrian will be planning the funeral along with the family of his son's mother.
